Child Youth and Development Center

Location: Atmore, AL
Project Size: 72,000 sq ft
The project involved the development of a 72,000 square-foot, single-story Child Youth and Development Center, featuring a 10,000 square-foot buffet-style and commercial kitchen, dining area, numerous classrooms, pre-school areas, a teen center, a library, staff areas, a pottery and sewing studio, outdoor classrooms, offices, and activity areas. The centerpiece is the community center auditorium/multipurpose room with state-of-the-art sound and lighting, a full stage, and auditorium seating. The structure includes a steel frame with metal studs, a metal/TPO roof, an integrated tornado shelter, a drywall interior, and a fiber cement and masonry wall system.

Site preparation involved developing a 5-acre site with a slab-on-grade foundation, designed to withstand Category IV wind speeds of up to 149 miles per hour, with the dining room acting as a safe room for wind speeds up to 200 miles per hour. Despite the tight construction schedule and over 60 inches of rainfall during the six-month project period, the construction was completed successfully. Comprehensive parking is provided on three sides of the facility.
